ABOUT THIS BELL
Welcome to ‘Old Tom’ our stunning two bedroomed luxury apartment named after the famous bell now housed in the Tom Tower, Oxford.
Cast in 1680, ‘Old Tom’ is one of the most popular bells in England and weighs six and a quarter tons. This giant bell (sometimes referred to as the ‘Great Tom’) is one of the loudest bells situated in Christ Church and, during the 12th century, was originally housed in Osney Abbey until transferred to Oxford after the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Aside from a student prank in 2002, ‘Old Tom’ has sounded every night since the Second World War, ringing 101 times at 21:05 (current UK time) signifying the original 101 scholars of the college.
