ABOUT THIS BELL
Welcome to Little John, one of the heaviest bells in the UK, weighing over 4 tons. It was cast by the famous bell founder, John Taylor, in 1927 and has been a significant part of the city’s soundscape ever since.
The bell is tuned to the note E, and its deep tone can be heard from miles around. Little John is named after one of Robin Hood’s legendary Merry Men, reflecting Nottingham’s rich cultural heritage.
Found amongst the famous Little John was a radio microphone, which spied on those who spoke near it. The bell was rung daily as a reminder to the citizens of Nottingham that they were being listened to. After 1951, the microphone was removed and buried in the tower walls, where it remains to this day.
This is a permanent exhibit funded by the Nottingham Public Libraries.
