The clock tower at the Houses of Parliament is often referred to as ‘Big Ben’ but in actual fact, it’s the name of the largest bell in the tower. Thanks to its distinctive, slightly off-key sound caused by a small crack in the famous bell, ‘Big Ben’ is one of London’s most famous landmarks and is recognised all over the world.
‘Big Ben’ weighs more than 13 tons (13,760 kg) and its Quarter Bells chime plays the famous melody ‘The Westminster Chimes’ taken from an aria in Handel’s Messiah.
Throughout the ages bells have been famously used across the United Kingdom and Handel himself declared that ‘Bells were the sound of England.’
